Walk into any pro shop and you’ll hear the same shorthand. “Symmetric is smooth. Asymmetric hooks more.”
Half of that is wrong, and it’s the half that costs you money.
We went to the USBC spec manual and to Storm’s and Motiv’s own engineering write-ups to sort this out. What we found is that most of the advice floating around the internet has the buying rule backwards. Let’s fix it.
The short answer
An asymmetric core does not hook more than a symmetric core. That is not what the shape controls.
Hook volume comes from total differential and coverstock. Both symmetric and asymmetric balls have total differential.
What asymmetry actually gives you is shape and tuning range. A sharper, more defined change of direction, plus a third variable your driller can use to move the reaction around.
And here is the part almost nobody gets right. According to the ball companies themselves, asymmetric cores are usually the answer for bowlers who need the ball to do more of the work, not for the biggest hand in the house. Motiv says it plainly: asymmetric is “typically better for speed dominant players.” Storm says bowlers who reach for asym “need a little extra help curving the ball.”
So if you’re a rev-dominant cranker who has been buying every new asym because that’s the “high performance” shelf, we need to talk.
What actually separates the two cores
Every bowling ball has three axes running through it. Think of them as X, Y and Z.
- X is the low RG axis. The ball wants to rev around this one.
- Y is the high RG axis. The ball wants to end up spinning around this one.
- Z is the intermediate axis, sitting between them.
Total differential is the RG difference between X and Y. This is your flare potential. Bigger number, more track flare, more hook available. Every ball has this number, symmetric or not.
Intermediate differential is the RG difference between Y and Z. This is the number that decides whether a core is called symmetric or asymmetric.
On a symmetric core, Y and Z are close to identical. Slice the core top to bottom and the halves fold onto each other cleanly.
On an asymmetric core, something sticks out. Y and Z separate. That separation creates a genuine preferred spin axis, the PSA, sometimes marked on the ball as the mass bias.
Storm draws the technical line at five percent: if the Y and Z RG values differ by more than five percent of the ball’s total differential, it’s asymmetric.
One more thing worth knowing, because it deflates a lot of arguments. Every ball becomes asymmetric once it’s drilled. Putting holes in a ball creates the imbalance. The debate is only ever about the undrilled core.
The line the USBC actually draws
Here’s where we can stop guessing, because it’s written down.
The USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual sets the exact threshold for what counts as an asymmetric ball, using the PSA marking as the tell:
- Intermediate differential of 0.000 to 0.003 inches: the ball must not carry a PSA marking. It’s symmetric, full stop.
- Intermediate differential of 0.004 to 0.009 inches: a PSA marking is optional. This is the gray zone.
- Intermediate differential of 0.010 inches or greater: a PSA marking is required. This is a true asym.
That gray zone matters. A ball with a 0.006 intermediate differential is technically doing something, but not much. Manufacturers sometimes market these as asymmetric anyway. Look at the actual number on the spec sheet before you pay the asym price.
While we’re in the manual, two more limits worth carrying in your head:
- Maximum total differential between any two axes: 0.060 inches. That’s the hook ceiling for every legal ball on the rack.
- Radius of gyration has to land between 2.460 and 2.800 inches on average within a weight class.
So when a ball gets marketed as the strongest thing ever built, remember it lives inside the same box every other legal ball does.
The myth we need to kill: asymmetric does not mean more hook
This is the one that empties wallets.
Take two balls with the same coverstock, same surface, same total differential of 0.050. One is symmetric, one is asymmetric.
They have the same flare potential. Same hook available.
What’s different is how they use it. The symmetric ball spreads the motion out. It reads the lane earlier, arcs, and gets to the pocket on a smoother, rounder path. The asymmetric ball stores the energy longer, then makes a sharper, more angular move off the friction.
Same total hook. Different shape.
Now put a weak cover on an asym and a strong sanded cover on a sym. The symmetric ball will out-hook the asymmetric ball every single time, and it isn’t close.
Coverstock and surface decide how much. Core decides when and what shape. Get that order right and you’ll stop buying the wrong ball.
What an asymmetric core actually buys you
Three real things.
1. A more defined, angular downlane move. Given the same cover and prep, an asym responds to friction faster and turns the corner harder. On heavy oil or a long pattern where there’s not much friction to work with, that snap is exactly what you want.
2. A third tuning variable. This is the underrated one. On a symmetric ball, your driller has two levers: pin-to-PAP distance and pin buffer. That’s it, especially now that balance holes are gone. On an asymmetric ball, they get a third lever: where the PSA sits relative to your PAP. Storm’s point here is worth repeating. A 6 inch pin-to-PAP layout on a symmetric ball usually gives you a very low-flaring, sleepy ball. That same 6 inch layout on a strong asym can flare hard. The core is doing work the symmetric ball simply cannot do.
3. Help revving up. Asyms get into a roll quicker. If you don’t generate big revs, the core is doing some of your hand’s job for you.
Notice that not one of those three things is “it hooks more.”
What a symmetric core actually buys you
Predictability. Smoother off the friction, less overreaction, less over/under. When the lane is broken down and squirrely, or when you’re on a short pattern and need the ball to hold a line, the symmetric shape is the safer bet. Storm’s own coach makes the point that better players tend to go symmetric on shorter patterns for exactly this reason.
A benchmark shape. Symmetric mid-performance balls are the ones you throw first to read the lane, because they tell you the truth. That’s why almost every entry and mid-performance line is symmetric.
Fewer ways to get it wrong. Since the August 2020 USBC rule change, balance holes are not allowed, and any non-gripping hole is illegal. The practical fallout: CG placement no longer matters for performance. On a symmetric ball, all you’re really tuning is pin position. If someone tries to sell you a magic CG placement on a symmetric ball in 2026, they’re a few years behind.
So which one should you buy?
Stop asking which is better. Ask which one covers the hole in your bag.
Buy symmetric if:
- You’re rev dominant. You already make the ball change direction. You need control, not more shape.
- You want a benchmark ball, the one you roll first to read the pattern.
- You bowl mostly on a house shot with normal-to-light volume.
- You bowl short patterns, or you’re fighting over/under on burnt lanes.
- You want a spare ball. Plastic spare balls are symmetric pancakes on purpose.
Buy asymmetric if:
- You’re speed dominant. Ball speed outruns your rev rate and you need the core to help you turn the corner.
- You’re bowling heavy oil, a long pattern, or a fresh sport shot where there’s no friction to feed on.
- Your bag is full of smooth arcing balls and you have no angular option.
- You want your driller to have maximum room to tune the reaction to your PAP.
One test that cuts through it: watch your ball on the fresh. If it’s already checking up early and burning out before the pocket, you do not need more asym. You need less ball or more length. If it’s sliding through the breakpoint and dying, an asym with a stronger cover is a real answer.
Where each one fits in a 3-ball arsenal
If you only own three balls for one house pattern, the split is straightforward.
- Benchmark: symmetric, mid differential, hybrid or solid cover. This is your read-the-lane ball. Throw it first every night.
- Oil ball: asymmetric, higher differential, solid cover. This is your fresh-lane and heavy-volume piece. It’s the one you’re paying up for.
- Spare ball: symmetric plastic. No hook, no drama, no core debate.

Notice what’s missing: a second asym. Most league bowlers do not need one. Two strong asyms in a bag usually means two balls that do the same thing, and one of them is sitting in the trunk.
The honest take on price
Asymmetric cores mostly live on the high performance shelf. That’s not a coincidence, and it’s not entirely about engineering.
Roughly 85 percent of high and upper-mid performance balls are asymmetric, which means “asymmetric” has quietly become a price signal as much as a spec. You are frequently paying the top-shelf price for a core shape you may not need.
Here’s the part that stings. A mid-performance symmetric ball with a good cover, drilled right and surfaced right for your game, will beat a top-shelf asym that doesn’t match up. Every time. Cover and surface do more of the heavy lifting than core shape does, and they cost less.
Buy the shape you’re missing. Not the shelf you think you belong on.

What is the difference between a symmetrical and asymmetrical bowling ball?
Symmetrical cores have nearly identical RG on their high and intermediate axes, so they roll smooth and predictable. Do asymmetrical bowling balls hook more?

Is an asymmetrical ball good for beginners?

Are asymmetrical balls better for high rev bowlers?
This is the one most articles get backwards. Motiv says asymmetric is typically better for speed dominant players, and symmetric is typically better for rev dominant players. Storm says asym users “need a little extra help curving the ball.” If you already have a big hand, the asym can push you into over/under territory. Crankers do use asyms, but usually to control when the shape happens on heavy oil, not to add hook.
What is mass bias, and is it the same as the PSA?
In everyday pro shop talk, yes. The preferred spin axis is the axis the ball wants to migrate to and spin around, which is always the high RG axis. On asymmetric balls it’s marked on the shell so your driller can position it relative to your PAP. Balls with an intermediate differential under 0.004 inches are not allowed to carry the marking at all.
Can you drill an asymmetric ball the same way as a symmetric one?
You can, but you’d be wasting it. The whole point of an asym is that PSA position gives your driller a third lever. If your pro shop lays out an asym without discussing where the PSA lands relative to your PAP, you’re paying for a core you’re not using.
Do the pros use symmetric or asymmetric?
Both, and they’re deliberate about it. On fresh, heavy or long patterns you’ll see asyms. On short patterns and broken-down lanes you’ll see them go symmetric, often symmetric urethane, for control. The tell is that pros pick the shape for the condition. They don’t pick the most expensive ball and hope.
Is a symmetric ball better on a house shot?
For most league bowlers, yes, at least as your first ball out of the bag. House shots have enough friction that you rarely need an asym’s snap to get to the pocket, and the symmetric shape is more forgiving when you miss.

The core shape is not a power ranking. It’s a shape.
Symmetric gives you a smooth, honest, controllable roll. Asymmetric gives you a sharper corner and a driller with more options. Neither one is an upgrade over the other. They’re different tools, and the right one is whichever one your bag is missing.
The bowlers who improve fastest are the ones who buy to fill a gap, not to fill a shelf. Look at what your three balls actually do on the lane tonight. If they all make the same shape, that’s the problem, and no price tag fixes it.
