Here is the short version. Your ball speed and your rev rate work as a pair. When one overwhelms the other, your ball reaction gets predictable in a bad way. Speed dominant means the ball skids too long and reads late. Rev dominant means the ball reads early and burns up before the pins. Figure out which side you fall on, and you stop fighting your own game and start matching balls and adjustments to it.

Most bowlers guess at this. They see a big rev rate and assume they are rev dominant, or a fast ball and assume they are speed dominant. That is not how it works. It is the relationship between the two numbers that decides your reaction, not either number alone.

Let’s break down what the terms mean, how to find your own numbers, and exactly what to do once you know.

What “dominant” actually means

Every hook comes from a trade between two forces. Ball speed pushes the ball down the lane and delays the hook. Rev rate makes the ball want to grab and turn. Your reaction is the result of how those two stack up against each other.

That balance is your speed to rev rate ratio. It is the single best predictor of how much hook potential you carry before you ever pick a ball.

  • Speed dominant: speed wins the trade. The ball skids too far, reads late, and can leave you weak in the pocket.
  • Rev dominant: revs win the trade. The ball reads early, hooks in the fronts, and can burn up and deflect by the time it reaches the pins.
  • Balanced: the two match. The ball reads the lane about where the maker intended.

None of these is automatically better. Plenty of great bowlers live on each side. The goal is to know your side so you can play to it.

The benchmark numbers

You need a reference point before your own numbers mean anything.

The average rev rate for a bowler sits around 325 rpm, so roughly 300 to 350 rpm is considered average. Average ball speed lands around 17 to 18 mph. A bowler near 17 mph and 300 to 350 rpm is the textbook balanced player.

The match rule coaches teach is simple: for every 1 mph you add or subtract from ball speed, your rev rate needs to move about 50 rpm in the same direction to stay balanced. So a bowler at 19 mph needs roughly 100 more rpm than average to still be balanced. A bowler at 15 mph can sit about 100 rpm below average and still be perfectly matched.

That is why raw numbers fool people. A bowler throwing 21 mph with 500 rpm is balanced, not rev dominant, because the revs keep pace with the speed. A bowler at 15 mph with 275 rpm is also balanced. Same idea, smaller engine.

One note on measuring speed. Most house lane monitors read speed near the pins, not at your hand. Release speed is a few mph higher than what the screen shows. When you compare yourself to the 17 mph benchmark, know which number you are looking at, because they are not the same.

How to find your own numbers

You cannot match what you have not measured. Here is how to get both figures without special gear.

Rev rate, the DIY way. Film yourself from the side in slow motion, most phones shoot 120 or 240 frames per second now. Count the revolutions of the ball from the instant it leaves your hand until it hits the first arrows, about 15 feet. Count the marks on the ball or the bridge of the grip as it rolls. Take the number of revs in that span and do the math for a full minute, or just use one of the free rev rate calculators that ask for revs over a set distance. A pro shop with video or a launch monitor can nail it in one shot if you want the clean number.

Ball speed. Your house monitor is the easy source, just remember it reads down lane. If your center has no monitor, film from the side, mark release and the moment it hits the pins, and divide 60 feet by the time in seconds, then convert to mph. A pro shop can measure release speed directly.

Get both numbers on the same shots. One fast practice ball and one slow one will not tell you anything. Throw your normal shot ten times and average it.

Signs you are speed dominant

Sometimes you do not need the camera. The lane tells you. You might be speed dominant if:

  • Your ball skids well past the arrows before it moves, even on fresh oil.
  • You leave a lot of weak or flat corner pins, the ball gets there but does not finish.
  • You constantly wish your equipment hooked more, and stronger balls still feel weak.
  • You have to hunt for the driest part of the lane to get any shape.
  • Your ball deflects into the 10 pin (righties) or the 7 (lefties) because it hits the pocket with too little revs behind it.

Speed dominant players fight to get the ball to turn in time. The engine behind the ball is small relative to how hard it is being pushed.

Signs you are rev dominant

You might be rev dominant if:

  • Your ball hooks early and you fight to keep it from crossing over to the wrong side.
  • You feel like you have to stand deep on the lane or you will pull the ball through the nose.
  • Pearls and weaker balls that everyone else finds too weak work great for you.
  • Your ball burns up energy and looks tired at the pins, hitting flat instead of driving through.
  • Fresh oil is your friend and broken down lanes feel unplayable because everything hooks too much.

Rev dominant players fight the opposite battle. They have plenty of turn but need the ball to save energy and get down the lane before it uses it all up. The good news is the PBA is full of slightly rev dominant players. Moderate rev dominance is a strong place to be. It only becomes a problem when it is extreme.

The balanced bowler

If your speed and revs track together, you are balanced, and life is easier. You can use most balls the way they are marketed, without trick layouts or heavy surface changes. Benchmark balls in particular shine for you, since they are designed around a middle-of-the-road reaction. Balanced does not mean you never adjust. It means your starting point is neutral, so your reads on the lane are cleaner.

What to do if you are speed dominant

Your job is to help the ball slow down and read the lane sooner. In rough order of what to try:

  1. Go stronger. Reach for balls with more traction, bigger cores, and stronger coverstocks. Speed dominant players usually carry the strongest equipment on their pair.   2. Add surface. A duller surface grabs the front of the lane and gets the ball moving earlier. This is the fastest, cheapest change you can make.
  3. Slow the ball down. Even 1 mph off your speed shifts the ratio. Try a slightly softer push and a lower ball position at the start.

  5. Play more direct. Speed dominant players often score best keeping the ball closer to the pocket rather than swinging it wide and hoping it comes back.

What to do if you are rev dominant

Your job is the opposite. You need the ball to save energy, skid a little longer, and finish rather than burn out. In order:

  2. Polish the surface. A shinier surface lets the ball push through the fronts instead of grabbing early.
  3. Speed the ball up. A little more speed delays the hook and keeps you from over reacting.

  5. Move deeper or open your angles. Rev dominant players usually play more inside lines and use the friction farther outside to bring the ball back.

The mistake most bowlers make

The number one error is judging yourself on one figure. High revs do not make you rev dominant. Fast speed does not make you speed dominant. It is the match between the two that sets your reaction.

A 400 rpm bowler at 21 mph and a 250 rpm bowler at 15 mph can both be balanced. Chase the ratio, not the headline number. Once you stop trying to bowl like a video you saw and start matching equipment to your own ratio, your ball reaction gets a lot more predictable, and predictable is what carries pins.
