What "pin up" and "pin down" actually mean

The pin is the small colored dot on your ball. It marks the top of the core inside. Every drilling layout is built off where that pin sits relative to your grip.

Pin up and pin down describe one thing: where the pin sits compared to your fingers.

Pin up means the pin is above your finger holes. Pin down means the pin is below them. That is it. Same ball, same core, just a different pin position when the driller lays it out.

People treat this like a hook switch. It is not. It is a flare knob.

The myth that pin down rolls earlier

You have heard it a hundred times. Pin down makes the ball roll up early, pin up lets it get down the lane. It sounds clean. It is also not really what is happening.

Storm says it plainly in their own layout guide: contrary to some beliefs, a pin-down layout does not necessarily make the ball roll earlier. What pin down actually does is decrease the ball's differential, which cuts flare potential.

So why does a pin-down ball often look smoother and earlier on the lane? Because less flare means the ball fights less and holds a tighter line. Smoother is not the same as earlier. It just reads as calmer to your eye.

Get this straight and the rest of the decision gets easy. You are not buying early or late roll with pin height. You are buying more flare or less flare.

What really changes: differential and flare

Differential is the difference between a core's high and low RG. In plain terms, it is the ball's flare potential built into the core.

Flare is track separation. As the ball rolls, it tips onto slightly different rings of surface with each revolution. More flare means each pass puts fresh, dry coverstock on the lane instead of the oily track you just laid down. That fresh grip is what makes a ball recover and hook.

Here is the connection. Pin up increases the ball's differential, which increases flare potential. Pin down decreases the differential, which reduces flare. That is the mechanism straight from the manufacturer, and it is the whole game.

More flare gives you a stronger, more angular move. Less flare gives you a smoother, straighter, more controllable move. Everything below comes from that one trade.

Pin-down layouts: control and a tighter line

Pin down is your control tool. Less flare, smoother shape, easier to keep on a line. Reach for it when the lane rewards staying tight.

Fresh oil, clean back ends. On a fresh shot the ball does not need help hooking, it needs to behave. A pin-down ball holds a straighter trajectory and keeps you from over-hooking through the fronts.

Playing a direct line. Early games, flatter patterns, up the boards. When your plan is a tight, repeatable path to the pocket, pin down gives you the stability to hit your spot shot after shot.

Managing transition. When the heads start to burn and everything wants to hook too soon, a pin-down ball is a reliable way to calm the reaction down without changing balls or moving way left.

If you carry a benchmark or a control piece, pin down on that ball is a smart build. It does the job it is there to do.

Pin-up layouts: angle and backend

Pin up is your power and angle tool. More differential, more flare, more recovery down the lane. Reach for it when you need the ball to move.

Opening up angles. As the pattern breaks down and you move your feet and eyes left, a pin-up ball creates more angle through the fronts. The extra flare helps it recover from a deeper angle and still find the pocket.

Tightening back ends. When the lanes start hooking and the back ends firm up, a pin-up ball's higher differential helps it keep a strong backend move so the ball does not die at the spot.

Longer patterns and heavy oil. When you need the ball to grip early and finish hard through the middle of the lane, pin up gives you the aggressive, angular shape that gets it done.

If you own a strong asymmetric or your main oil ball, pin up is usually where it wants to live.

Pin-to-PAP distance: the other half of the flare story

Pin height is only one lever. Pin-to-PAP distance is the other, and honestly it does more of the heavy lifting on flare.

Your PAP is your positive axis point, the spot the ball rotates around off your hand. The distance from the pin to that point sets flare potential more than up or down does.

The general shape of it: a pin roughly 3 to 3 and a half inches from your PAP produces the most flare and the earliest, strongest grip. Push that distance out toward 5 inches or more and flare drops off, giving you more length and a smoother read.

This is why two "pin up" balls can react nothing alike. Pin up or pin down sets a baseline, and the pin-to-PAP distance dials in how much flare you actually get. Your driller measures your PAP and builds the layout around it. If you do not know your PAP, that is the first thing to fix before you argue about pin position.

How to pick a layout for your game

You do not have to memorize physics. You have to answer a few honest questions.

  1. What is this ball's job? Benchmark and control balls lean pin down. Oil and angle balls lean pin up.
  2. What do your lanes do? Higher-friction houses and dry conditions want more control, so pin down earns its spot. Heavy oil and longer patterns want flare, so pin up wins.
  3. What is already in your bag? If everything you own flares hard and burns up, add a pin-down piece for control. If you have nothing that recovers from an angle, add a pin-up piece.
  4. Do you actually know your PAP and rev rate? Higher-rev players can tame a pin-up ball. Lower-rev and speed-dominant players often get cleaner, more usable reaction out of a slightly weaker, smoother build. Match the layout to your hand, not to a YouTube video.
