The simplest read is to film your release from behind at high frame rate, then watch how the ball comes off your hand:
- If it rolls forward end over end almost right away, your rotation is low.
- If it spins sideways for a long time before it starts to roll forward, your rotation is high.
For a real number, most pro shops and coaches use the position of your oil track relative to your positive axis point, or PAP, plus video analysis. How to measure your axis tilt with the oil ring
Tilt you can measure yourself with an oil track, a marker, and a tape measure. This is the fun one.

- Throw a normal shot on a freshly oiled lane so the ball comes back with clean oil rings on it.
- Find the first oil ring nearest your thumb and finger holes, the one closest to your track. Trace it with an oil pencil or a washable marker so you can see the full circle.

How to change tilt and rotation at the release
Once you know your numbers, you can work on them. Small changes, one at a time.
To add axis rotation, or side roll:
- Stay behind and slightly to the side of the ball longer through release.
- Let the fingers turn the ball more as they come out, like turning a doorknob a little.
- Keep your wrist firm so the hand can rotate instead of collapsing.
To add axis tilt, or spin:
- Come around the ball more with the hand more under it, palm rotating up sooner.
- A cupped wrist tends to raise tilt.
To reduce either one, do the opposite. Come out of the ball cleaner and flatter with the hand more behind and less around it, and you cut both tilt and rotation toward that forward roll.
One rule holds no matter what you are chasing: change one thing, throw a set of shots, then measure again. If you move your hand three ways at once, you will never know which change did what.
