Here is the whole idea. You keep aiming at the same arrow you use for your strike shot. To cover a spare, you move your feet on the approach a set number of boards, then throw the same shot.
For a right-handed bowler using a strike target around the second arrow, the moves look like this.
To cover the left-side pins, you move your feet right and throw the ball across the lane:
- Move right 3 boards for the 2 pin
- Move right 6 boards for the 4 pin
- Move right 9 boards for the 7 pin
To cover the right-side pins, you move your feet left and send the ball out to the right:
- Move left 3 boards for the 3 pin
- Move left 6 boards for the 6 pin
- Move left 9 boards for the 10 pin
That is it. Same arrow every time. Your feet do the work. Because your eyes never leave a target you already trust, the shot feels familiar even when the leave is ugly.
The 10-pin caveat
Be honest with yourself on the big move. That 9-board slide for the 10 pin (or the 7 pin as a lefty) is the one that gives people trouble. Slide too far and you run out of approach, or you crowd the ball return, or you get a cramped armswing that pushes the ball right and leaves the 10 standing again.
A lot of good bowlers cheat this one. Instead of a straight 9-board move with the same target, they set up flat-footed near the corner and aim at a spot down lane. If the 9-board move keeps leaving you short on the corner, that is your sign to test a dedicated 10-pin setup instead of forcing the formula.
3-6-9 pros and cons
The good: dead simple, one target to remember, works with one ball, and it is easy to teach a junior or a new league bowler in ten minutes.
The catch: it needs open approach room. If the ball return crowds your slide, or you are on an end lane tight to a wall, moving your feet 9 boards is not always possible. That is exactly the gap the next system fills.
The 2-4-6 system: keep your feet, move your target
The 2-4-6, sometimes called the Swedish system, flips the whole thing. Your feet stay put. Your eyes do the moving.
Instead of sliding your stance, you keep your starting position stable and shift your visual target at the arrows a set number of boards for each spare.
For a right-hander, you work off two reference lines: your strike aim and a 10-pin aim. From your strike line, the target shifts look like this:
- Move your target 2 boards to cover the next pin in (the 2 pin)
- Move your target 4 boards for the 4 pin
- Move your target 6 boards for the 7 pin
Your feet never move. You are simply pointing the ball at a new board and letting the angle do the work. Because the numbers are smaller, the 2-4-6 is often called the more accurate system. Small target moves leave less room for a big alignment error.
2-4-6 pros and cons
The good: it is precise, and it works anywhere. Ball return in the way? End lane against the wall? Does not matter, your feet are not moving. Advanced bowlers lean on it because dialing a target two boards is finer than sliding your body three.
The catch: it asks more of your accuracy. You have to actually hit the board you are aiming at, and you have to trust your eyes to read the arrows cleanly. For a bowler who is still fighting to repeat shots, that is a big ask. This is why the 2-4-6 gets recommended for more experienced players.

Move to the 2-4-6 if you already close your easy spares, you repeat your shot well, and you keep running into spots where the ball return or a wall kills your foot movement. If you have felt cramped shooting a 10 pin off an end lane, the 2-4-6 solves a problem you already have.

Three mistakes that wreck both systems
First, changing speed on the spare shot. Both systems assume the same ball speed as your strike ball. Lob it soft or muscle it hard and your angles lie to you. Same shot, same speed, moved reference.
Second, hooking your spares. If you throw your reactive strike ball at a 10 pin and it grabs, the board math falls apart. Throw a plastic ball straight, or flatten your hand out and take the hook off. This is why plastic spare balls exist.
Third, not committing to the move. Half a move is a miss. If the system says slide 9 boards, slide 9 boards and trust it. Peeking back toward the middle mid-approach is how corner pins survive.
